Wambuli Solar Pump - Africa Transformation Initiative

Donation protected

Rationale:

To provide water resources for food production, sustenance, and wealth creation that will break the cycle of poverty and dependence in our effort to transform our communities and create sustainable projects.

Acute water shortage in many East African locations, particularly in the semi-arid communities, is fueling the spread of famine and starvation. Many residents have resorted to drinking water from literally "anywhere," and inadequate sanitation just exacerbates the crisis and lends itself to outbreak of water-borne diseases.

However, land as a resource is accessible to most Africans, particularly those in the rural areas. In order for this resource to produce food and create wealth for the users, there is great need for water.  Therefore, the need to sink boreholes.  Borehole water can be for domestic use and also for horticultural farming.  Projects can move from merely producing food for sustenance to creating wealth for communities around the boreholes.

Our aim would be to see the cycle of dependence on food aid broker and the communities moved from just self-sustenance to wealth creation as they develop their gardens and farms for maximum yield.

Project Goal:
Install pumps in Ukambani region:  Kimua and Wambuli

Ukambani region has had the most noticeable impact from what could be attributed to global warming. The region has been without adequate rain of the last three years. Hence the need for drilling wells. ATI has already completed the boreholes in Kimua and Wambuli. Ukambani region is in only a 1-hour drive away from Nairobi. The area is very fertile and with availability of water, crops like maize and a variety of vegetables can be raised and marketed.

When outfitted with pumps, irrigation equipment and agricultural inputs, the drilled wells will be useful in various ways, including:

Provision of drinking water to the church congregation
Sale of water for sustaining the project and income generation
Irrigation of farms around the area to necessitate agricultural production
Domestic use by the community
Nursery irrigation for tree planting, to reverse the impact of global warming
