Funds for Aria Jeffrey

Prior to last weekend my niece Aria was a thriving newborn.   My entire family was overjoyed with the addition of Aria and her twin brother Alvin on April 23rd.  Of course no one was happier than their parents Andrew and Jennifer.  Aria and Alvin had just been to the pediatrician for a check-up Friday, May 27th, both receiving fantastic reports.

That night was when Aria's symptoms started.  Her first symptom was fussiness, from there symptoms became more concerning.  The next morning she vomited and started to act lethargic.  At this point Jen and Andrew brought her to see her pediatrician in Cedar Rapids.

After determining that Aria had a bowel obstruction she was transferred to Iowa City Hospital.  There she underwent her first surgery to relieve the obstruction.

During this surgery the cause of the obstruction was determined to be a third intestinal band (most of us only have 2).  Having an extra intestinal band is relatively rare.  This is unrelated to Aria being born premature or being a twin.  These bands attach the intestines to the abdominal wall.   As Aria grew the band constricted her bowel causing the obstruction to occur.

In the past week Aria has underwent three surgeries to correct the obstruction and remove 15 cm of her bowel (which was approximately 1/4th of the impacted tissue).

Due to the removal of this portion of her bowel Aria will have an ostomy for the next 6 to 8 weeks.  She will then undergo another surgery to reattach the healthy bowel and remove the ostomy.  Following this surgery she will be hospitalized for an additional 2 to 6 weeks.  Aria has a long road of recovery ahead and is expected to remain hospitalized for approximately 2 to 6 weeks.

During Aria’s hospitalization her parents Jen and Andrew, along with her twin brother (Alvin) have been staying in Iowa City.   Unfortunately Andrew's paid leave has run out and any additional time spent with Aria in the hospital will be unpaid.

As you can imagine this is not only emotionally but financially stressful for their family.   My goal in starting this page is to relieve some of the financial burden from their family inorder to focus on Aria's recovery.  Any donations are greatly appreciated as well as your thoughts and prayers.
