Technology for Students w/ Disabilities

Donation protected
In September 2014, Washington Vocational Services (www.wvs.org) a non-profit that provides employment services for people with disabilities will be opening a transition program for students 18-21 years old in Skagit County. WVS has been providing employment services and creating relationships with employers since 1976 and for the past 5 years WVS has operated the transition program at Sedro Woolley High School. Our vision is to expand and include students from all the local districts. The goal of this program titled ATTIC (Adult Transition to Independence Center) is to prepare students for life after high school by providing independent living services and employment preparation through community involvement.

In order to make this wonderful center happen, WVS has created partnerships with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), the Developmental Disability Administration (DDA), and most of the local school districts. This includes Burlington-Edison, Sedro Woolley, Concrete, and Mt. Vernon.

We have remodeled our Burlington office to include a store front for retail training purposes, an in-house training kitchen, and laundry training facility. However, we still need technological materials for students to use in the community as well as for classroom purposes. Your donations will go toward a smart board and computers for the classroom, as well as tablets for student use in the community. A lot of people with disabilities find tablets extremely useful as accommodations in the workplace. There are multiple applications that serve as valuable tools for explaining how work is completed in creative ways.

Thank you for your support in helping to include and recognize all people for their abilities and contributions to the community. This transition program will be yet another step in the right direction, allowing students to learn through community involvement and earn paid employment by the time they graduate!
