Anti-Bullying Campaign ~ Stage Play

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

"Why Can't We Be Friends" is a stage play which examines the mental and emotional affects that bullying has on children. For the calendar year of 2013, 77% of American students are bullied mentally, verbally, & physically; 160,000 students miss school for fear of being bullied; and 282,000 students are physically attacked in secondary schools each month.

Objective

The statement "Why Can't We Be Friends" is a relatable phrase that is so necessary in this country. From wars to racism to homosexuals to bullying, the quest for unity and peace is on an all-time high in this country.  The mission of the "Why Can't We Be Friends" stage play is to raise awareness of the prevalence of bullying in schools globally while drawing awareness to decrease its impact amongst students.

Goals

The act of bullying is something that has been around for years, but has only recently taken on a dangerous connotation. With the introduction of new social media outlets like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, it's becoming more prevalent and has changed from just name calling and teasing amongst peers to a social network badgering frenzy for the world to see; news reports show the effects of bullying resulting in depression, violence, and suicide in the recent months alone. The campaign's main focus is to shed light on the epidemic and end bullying for good.

Solution

Our campaign is designed to address the responsibility held by each party involved with the act of bullying; The Bully, The Victim & The Spectator. We highlight the process of how bullying occurs by visually showing the audience how we all play a role. As the bully, it's evident that they badger their prey; as for the victim getting picked on, it's evident that there's physical or emotional harm being done. As the spectator, we hold a greater responsibility because we have more of the power to intermit the act of bullying. In most cases the victim is afraid to report the situation and the bully him or herself is definitely not going to make it known. The spectator ultimately holds the key to being the voice for the victim: they have the power to shed light on those grey a
