Hello everyone!
My name is Annie Lui and I'm a junior studying in Texas, U.S.A. Earlier this year, I was blessed with the opportunity to apply for the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) scholarship, sponsored by the Department of State, to serve as an youth ambassador in Germany for 10 months from August 2014 to June 2015. On April 1st, I received an email telling me that I GOT ACCEPTED! I'm very very VERY excited and thrilled to be 1 of the 50 future ambassadors in my region (250 in the whole U.S.) and can't wait to start my journey in Germany! This is an experience I've dreamt for years and I'm really thankful for the opportunity. This will be my first time going to (and living in!) Europe. Ever since I moved to the U.S. from Hong Kong a few years ago, I've became more and more interested in different cultures, languages and people. I opened my eyes to new possibilities and wowed myself with all the new experiences, both good and bad. I know my year in Germany will do the same and allow me to grow more mature, independant and open-minded. I'm ready to face upcoming challenges (I can't even make a sentense in German as of today) and enjoy this life-changing adventure. I've also made a blog so that everyone can read about my journey in Germany, and even after the exchange year.
Without this scholarship, I wouldn't even be thinking about studying abroad because most programs cost so much! Although the scholarship covers most fees, I'll still have to pay for round-trip ticket from Texas to D.C. (~$300), hotel night in D.C., spending money (~$200/ month), summer / online courses ($1000), excursions (several hundreds),gifts for my host family, transportation, and possible medical fees. I don't want my parents in Hong Kong (with my mom unemployed and my dad working part-time) to have this financial burden because of me.
