With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant families are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-related expenses. In our own town of Derry, PA, volunteers are raising funds for COTA in honor of transplant patients like local boy, Angelo Giorno.

Angelo G was born November 22, 2010, in Philadelphia PA. Little Angelo was born with his intestines on the outside of his body; this severe complication forced the doctors to remove these intestines, thus putting him in the very serious category of “Short Gut Syndrome". He underwent many operations at birth to try to restore what intestines he had left. He also had a ileostomy, PUS fistula, Broviac, & a feeding tube.
When it was time for Angelo to be released to home, his parents realized that they would not be able to correctly care for their little boy, so he remained in the hospital and placed in foster care in Bucks County for the first 16 months of his life. Then Dean and I were contacted about taking him into our care. We thought long and hard about this life-altering decision and all the complications surrounding him and his needs. We decided that this sickly little boy needed a loving and caring home and that the hospital was not the right place for him. He was flown to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. Dean set up visitations to see the little guy not knowing what to expect. When we met him all we saw was this sickly frail little boy that weighed just 16 pounds, He was hooked up to so many tubes and hoses, machines and pumps. He turned his head and looked at us, then gave us the biggest and warmest smile, and reached his little arm out to us. We knew right then and there that this little boy would be in our care. We then committed to learn how to care for his special needs hospital and eventually he was released to us. Since then he has undergone many more surgeries including intestine blockages corrections, blood transfusions, and the reversal of the ileostomy, to name just a few.
We now have monthly doctor visits to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh at the I-care Clinic as well as routine follow up appointments. The hospital is very pleased with the progress of his care and is now a STATUS 1 on the transplant list for intestines and liver.
In August 2014 Dean and I were granted legal guardianship of our little man.
Angelo is now 4 years old, 38 inches tall, and an amazing 32 lbs. Angelo is, for now, a happy little growing boy.
