Alen Hadzic- Road To The Olympics (Tokyo 2020)

Donation protected
Hello everyone!

I am raising money to help cover my travel and living expenses this Olympic season, May 2019- April 2020.

My dream since I first picked up a fencing weapon was to try and make an Olympic team. In 2016, I narrowly missed qualifying for the games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by one spot. After being away from the sport for a few years, I decided to dedicate two years (seasons) of my life (2018-2019 & 2019-2020) to fencing prior to the 2020 games in Tokyo.

In order to qualify for the Olympic games, one needs to be TOP 3 in the United States. Through my efforts, and with the help of my sponsors and donors, I am proud to say that I am currently ranked Number 5 in the country at the end of the 2018-2019 season. This puts me in an incredibly competitive position for the 2019-2020 Olympic cycle.

During any given season, there are 12 competitions in total; 8 internationals (4 World Cups and 4 Grand Prixs), and 4 domestic tournaments. At the end of a season, your best 4 international results, and best 2 domestic results, are aggregated in order to determine your ranking.

Below is the 2018-2019 schedule (and my results), of which the last 3 competitions count toward the 2019-2020 Olympic cycle.

Milwaukee, WI- Domestic- October 2018

Berne, SUI- International- November 2018

Cincinnati, OH- Domestic- December 2018

Charlotte, NC- Domestic- January 2019- SILVER

Heidenheim, GER- International- January 2019

Doha, QAT- International- January 2019

Vancouver, CA- International- February 2019- 59th Place

Budapest, HUN- International- March 2019

Buenos Aires, ARG- International- March 2019- 42nd Place

Salt Lake City, UT- Domestic- April 2019- BRONZE

Cali, COL- International- May 2019

Paris, FRA- International- May 2019

Columbus, OH- Domestic- June 2019

As some of you may or may not know, Fencing is an astronomically expensive sport (a fencing weapon costs around $200 and a fencer generally needs 10 per season, a uniform costs ~$750, private lessons with my coach cost $800 a month, etc.) and I am struggling to cover all of these expenses.

A typical international competition will cost around $2000 (flight, hotel 3-4 days, food, entry fee, etc.) and a domestic will cost anywhere between $600-1000.

In order to try and cover these expenses, I have been coaching, working contract-consultancy jobs, and picking up any other part-time positions that I can, time permitting. With the intensity of my travel and training schedule (morning, afternoons, and evenings), it becomes extremely hard to find time and work.

I am currently very financial stressed, trying to make my dream come true, and ask for your support in this endeavor. With your support, any alleviation of this financial burden will bring me one step closer to the finish line.

If you have any questions regarding fencing, finances, or have any thoughts, questions, or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.

For any donors that are in the New York/ New Jersey area, I will gladly schedule a complimentary fencing lesson with you where- we can talk fencing, I can teach you the basics, and answer any questions that you may have.

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support and for helping make my dream become a reality.
