Help Katie Become A Teacher!

Donation protected

Hi there!

Who knew that trying to become a teacher would be so darn expensive?!

I am requesting money for a few things all related to my ability to become a teacher, (or not!) :(

1. Taking West-E tests. Essentially, these tests are subject based, and I need to pass them in order to student-teach. I need to take two -- one in English and one in Social Studies. Each test is $180 (for a total of $360). I cannot student-teach until I have passed these exams.

2. Completing the EdTPA. This is the test that occurs during my student teaching, where over 18 weeks I am THE teacher in the classroom, so I'll have to prepare materials, teach lessons, and video tape myself teaching in front of my students. It costs $300 to register for this test, which I must do before I begin student-teaching, and then complete in order to become a teacher. Passing this test is what will ultimately grant me my teaching certificate.

3. Other related living expenses. If that wasn't enough, student-teaching is an unpaid, full-time job. I'll be working in my designated school from 7am or earlier, until 5pm or later. Then, just as regular teachers must do, I will have to spend several hours per night grading assignments, creating materials for the next lesson, responding to student concerns, completing my EdTPA Tasks etc. The ONLY difference between my role during these 18 weeks and a regular teacher's comes down to pay: I won't be getting a dime. Student-teaching is technically still a class at Western, and I have to pay for the student teaching credits in order to receive them (and tuition is spendy!). Additionally, I am not supposed to be employed during this time due to the stressful nature of the program and the demands it places on one's time. But, there are still bills to be paid! I'm asking for about $2300 to help me pay my rent, my internet bill, my phone bill, my electricity for 4 months (January-April) because I might not be able to work during this time because of student-teaching.

I have worked 20-40 hours per week since I was a senior in high school. Often times, I have juggled more than one job and have still done very well in school. My savings account has been utterly depleted by the cost of living in Bellingham and tuition costs.

If I am being honest, there are still many other things with a high monetary cost that I need in order to become a successful teacher (like a reliable computer and a professional wardrobe), but I am only asking for the absolute necessities here.

Any amount will surely help me achieve my dream of giving back to the world through becoming a teacher. :)
THANK YOU!
