Special Education in Jamaica

The Academy is an academic special magnet school for gifted, challenged, combination and standard learners in Jamaica. We cater to the underserved learners with challenges in the capital Kingston and its suburbs. We are a registered non-profit and charity school and we need financial assistance to maintain our services to the public.
There are only a few public school places for the challenged learner in Jamaica, mostly for profoundly disabled children. However, there is an urgent need for approximately 100,000 spaces for a wide variety of learning disabilities. The average Jamaican family cannot afford to pay for special education so their children remain in unsuitable educational settings or at home.
At The Academy no student is turned away for affordability problems. We seek funding for ten students with financial need because there is an unacceptably high statistical correlation between under-achievers/school dropouts and criminality. We want to break the cycle of illiteracy and poverty.
