In New Jersey there are many organizations that provide support, services and information to parents or caregivers of children with special needs. But what about the siblings? More specifically, a sometimes overlooked group is the adolescents and adult siblings of people with special needs who are coming to the realization that one day they may become the caregiver for their brother or sister.
SIBS NJ (Supportive Initiatives for Brothers & Sisters in New Jersey) is a new non-profit organization that aims to support the siblings of individuals with special needs or mental health conditions across the state and across the lifespan of the sibling. The inspiration behind the name comes from the term “sibs” used by siblings within the disability community when referring to themselves.
Founded by siblings of people with an intellectual or developmental disability and sibling supporters, SIBS NJ seeks to provide support groups, advocacy initiatives, and information to siblings and their families. the group seeks to meet once a month in various locations around the state to provide referral information, support groups, and advocacy/research information to siblings of individuals with special needs, just like its founders, who have or have had very little resources or ways of connecting with other siblings across the lifespan. We would like to raise money for operational expenses: print information, website creation and maintenance, event costs, and travel costs so that we can go to different parts of the state or the country to connect with other sibs or policy makers, and so much more! Eventually, we hope to become an established organization with a strong presence in the state.
Please help us help other sibs and families by supporting the development of this organization. All involved are volunteering our time for this and are unpaid at this time- but we cannot afford to start up alone. Please consider donating anything you can to support siblings and families as a whole who do so much everyday to support the ones they love!
