Fall 2002. A woman gives birth to a baby girl... And that's when her world changed completely.
Cherokee was born with autism, "a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior." Over the years, she devoloped Attention Deficit Disorder and Intermittent explosive disorder. She is the sweetest young girl who loves to sing, play outside, and paint.
Meet my friend Dawn. Forever-29-years-old-but 40 years young, over the past two years, Dawn and her daughter (11 years old now), have been bouncing between homes, never being able to save enough money to afford their own place. After her and her husband's divorce, and developing Degenitive Disks and suffering from Bipolar disorder among other things, the two of them have been living with family and friends. Dawn is unable to work, so the two of them have been living off of Social Security for Cherokee's disabilities.
On August 1st, Dawn moved from Ohio to North Carolina to stay with me. During these two weeks that she was here she researched, found, and applied for an apartment to give Cherokee the stable living environment that she needs and deserves. There was just one problem. They don't get paid until the first.
So close to signing the lease, and Cherokee coming down on the 26th, Dawn is at a stand still. She has a place to live until the 27th and after that, her only other choice will be to seek a shelter that can house them.
The donations amounted from this gofundme page will go directly to paying for the first month's rent and deposit for the apartment she has found, as well as paying for the place she is staying now. Once Dawn and Cherokee have esablished residency, the both are going to apply for Medicaid and Dawn will apply for Social Security Disability.
Please help get this wonderful and hardworking woman and fun and loving child a place to live! Helping get Dawn and Cherokee back on their feet would be so amazing. Let's help and hope!
