I am a South African Native and have been teaching in the USA for the past 15 years. I have won numerous local and National Awards, including the Disney Teacher Honoree Award in 2006. I started and turned around a failing school in New Orleans, developed teachers and impacted the US education landscape in various ways.
As a colored student growing up in The Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth, what got me to where I am today is teachers believing in me, pushing me, and providing me with a quality education even during the Apartheid years.
This week the National Senior Certicate results for South Africa was published and once again my Province, Eastern Cape scored last with a pass rate below 65%. Teacher morale is low in my Province and I know I have to do something. I would like to take 2 other amazing American teachers with me to South Africa and do some teacher development as well as in shool coaching over the summer period in my hometown of Port Elizabeth. I would like to provide teachers with some resurces necessary to ensure students success beside on class coaching. I know that it is my duty to help my city, my people and my province provide our students with an excellent education.
I need help, helping the students in South Africa. A better teacher leads to higher expectations, better results and succesful students.
