In the name of Love

My parents arrived to the USA on June 9th 2014 to visit me.
On June 12th My Dad was extremely exhausted, slept most of the day and when awake was showing signs of confusion.
On the early hours of June 13th, he fell out of his bed and was unresponsive.

We, alarmed, brought him to the nearest emergency room, Advocate Sherman Hospital.

He was then admitted on June 13 in the Critical Care Unit for severe pneumonia. His pneumonia was so critical that he required for him to be on the ventilator for a few weeks, as of today July 23rd 2014 he is still hospitalized in Sherman.
My parents are just simple retired people; they are living on government supported income. Their income is just enough to support themselves. They don't own any properties, or any savings.

They just wanted to visit their family for a couple of weeks. They even contracted some travel insurance to make sure everything will be fine. Unfortunately those little vacations turned into a medical and financial nightmare for them and their family.
Nobody could have expected what happened to them.

As of today the Critical Care bill from Sherman reached the amount of $527 000 ...

After discount (yes, do not ask... i do not get the discount part) and what my parents insurances paid, the amount is still $289 000.

We did apply for charity, not sure that it is going to work.
The Health American system is completely messed up!
Do you know that if my parents were illegal they will be able to ask for Medicaid?
But they are just visitors... so they have to pay huge bills...
Something is really really wrong...

Beside that my Dad is now stable, out of Critical Care.... he should be transferred to a rehab center but again as they are not insured in the USA... this is not an option.

So, basically Sherman is doing everything they can to get rid of my Dad. I mean, the Case Management.
I have to say that Doctors and Nurses are wonderful! We met people at Sherman that are truly dedicated to their mission!

They are pushing and pushing for my parents travel insurance to come get him with an Air Ambulance and then transfer him to France.
This is what is going to happen as far as know sometimes this week. That transfer is covered by the travel insurance.

That doesn't erase the bill though; I cross my fingers for Sherman to accept their Charity application...

My parents just wanted to visit me for a couple of weeks...
