Save our lives to continue our mission

Dear Brothers, friends, allies,
through this story, we share our most recent concerns and some views on the current situation of aggravated violence, because of the social war that exists in El Salvador.

We are leaders of a Christian community of Protestant roots, an inclusive community, where we ensure human rights, as we understand the basis of sharing the message of Jesus of Nazareth. We understand our task from the perspective of provoking encounters between people, promote honest dialogue and unity in diversity. We implement harm reduction strategies, always basing our reflections and actions, in the loving and caring actions of Jesus Christ.

Over the past year we have shared liturgical rituals with the celebrative Community, from which we promote equality and the pursuit of social justice. The topics covered in this program include sexual and reproductive rights. Decriminalization of Therapeutic Abortion. Rights of sexual diversity. Rights of People Who Use Drugs (Amendment to drug policy, drug demand reduction and prevention of drug use). Human rights and individual freedoms. Demystifying anachronistically of biblical texts misconstrued or interpreted  to justify discrimination and wrongful convictions to the most vulnerable populations.

The clergy and ministers of the community, are formed by Rev. Daniela Kreher (Program Coordinator of harm reduction and risk "+ info - risk " ), the Director of praise and Worship ( Minister of praise, liturgical music) Andrés Montano, Víctor Aragón (Communications Officer, youth leader and coordinator of La Maria Guanaca) and Rev.Martin Diaz (pastor president, principal leader and spokesman of the movement for the reform of drug policy in El Salvador).

We have suffered death threats, among other reasons to support a young woman and organizations who accompanied her. Her case toured the world press beacuse her life was in danger, the gorvernment denied to her the possibility of practice a therapeutic abortion because of her condition (erythematous lupus). We have made visible the need to reform the laws that protect the lives of women and the therapeutic, ethical and eugenic abortion should be treated from a holistic health perspective rather than adult-centered patriarchal and religious doctrines.

We turned to Amnesty International, who received our first complaint and then ignored our attempts to contact without explanation and/or apparent reason, despite being recommended and presented by the executive director of one of the most prestigious organizations of human rights in the country.

We noticed a lack of interest and refusal to work together ( ex. investigations / studies) , a lack of cooperation from the relevant government agencies (with the exception of the Anti Narcotics Division of Police) and rehabilitation institutions for drug addiction . Despite all the difficulties, we have managed to start study groups and leadership training.

We have been attacked in the press and on social networks by fundamentalist groups because of our positions, until today maybe they not clearly understood yet or they consciously deny, the many benefits of public policies to reduce damages and risks, as well the family planning and sex education in schools. It has not been understood, the emergencies of LGBTI communities , women and youth specifically. There are still coercive electroshock treatments in the country, both to treat "sexual deviations" and/or "addiction" clearly violating the Siracusa Principles.

We conducted memorial events and we asked an investigation and bring justice for the murder of human rights defender, Tania Vasquez, feminist organizations request clemency for women sentenced to 30 years in prison for abortion (aggravated murder) .
We have organized the First Symposium on Drug Policy of El Salvador with state public authorities and foreign experts; and First Parade to a New Drug Policy which brought together various mainly youth sectors. It is also a pastoral concern for food sovereignty and the right to water, so we have also co-organized the first concentration for food sovereignty, the right to water and care for native seeds.

(My Church Is Calling for the Regulation of Drugs As a Path Towards Peace)

Another reason that makes fear for our lives is that we are part of the New Country Movement (MNP) which is a social movement that promotes participatory democracy; in recent weeks coordinating group members have received death threats. Especially the Rev. M. Diaz, for his role in the movement and his personal relationship with the Secretary General Dagoberto Gutiérrez.

With this letter we request your help to protect our lives and continue our mission. We seek the support of the Government of Uruguay, as it is the country we can guarantee our safety from the groups that threaten us.

In the knowledge that the God of Life and History is with all of  us, and he guide and protect us, thank you for your support.
