Antigonish Solar for Poverty Relief

This is a critical time in history: scientists agree that the green energy transition cannot happen soon enough. They also agree that solar must be a big part of our future energy mix. We know that we need to lead our governments into working together to bring about this necessary transition to the way we live!
The Antigonish Community Energy Co-op ( www.acecoop.ca) works to accelerate the local green energy transition by promoting renewables, organizing group purchases of solar PV systems (thereby driving down costs), lobbying for laws that support solar power as well as other renewables, and much more.
It is essential that while we address the problem of energy production, we don’t leave those living with energy poverty behind. Energy poverty in Nova Scotia occurs when people, especially those on limited incomes, have to choose between covering their electricity costs or their other expenses. Some Antigonish residents are forced to use food banks or to stop buying medicine so they can pay electricity bills.
The ACEC has already raised $7500 through our first group-purchase of solar PV systems. Now, we are asking you to help us raise the remaining funds that will allow us to install a solar PV system for local energy-poverty reduction. We are aiming to raise another $10 000, which will allow us to install a 10KW system. The money will cover the purchase of the equipment (panels, connection gear, converters, etc.) and the labor for its installation.
Secondary benefits from this initiative to the local community include: raising awareness of issues at the intersection of energy and poverty, raising awareness of the co-op's work and the viability of solar power, and increasing the volume of the co-op's solar power group-buy (thereby decreasing costs to local citizens).
The single biggest factor in adopting solar is whether you know someone who already has solar. By organizing group-buys and putting solar systems on as many homes as possible, we hope to trigger a snowball effect to kick-start the local green energy transition. Your contribution today can make a world of difference to a local low income household, while also playing an integral role in shaping the future of our planet for years to come!
