Humanitarian intern in South Sudan

Donation protected
This summer I will be volunteering with INTERSOS  in South Sudan to complete the final component of my Master of Social Work degree and contribute to ongoing humanitarian response efforts.  Over the past two years I have studied international social and economic development; this practicum will allow me to apply my learning and support the work of INTERSOS in providing Education in Emergencies to the children of South Sudan.

Why South Sudan?
At independence in 2011, South Sudan inherited very few social institutions and systems. As a result, human development indicators were low and the goverment had to begin building political, education, and health systems.

Since December of 2013, the country has been entangled in a conflict that has displaced over 1.5 million people and taken the lives of over 50,000.

Why Education in Emergencies?
The conflict has caused nation-building activities to come to a halt as international efforts have focused on protecting basic rights and well-being of conflict-affected populations throughout the country. While basic provisions of shelter, healthcare and food remain the top priorities in humanitarian response, there is growing recognition of the need for Education in Emergencies.

Children's education cannot wait for peace; instead Education in Emergencies is essential in providing psychosocial support, lifeskills messaging, a safe place for children, and the foundation for a strong, peaceful society in the future. The nation's fledgling education system is ill-equipped to meet the needs of displaced and conflict-affected children.

Over 1 million children in South Sudan are in need of Education in Emergencies interventions. My work with INTERSOS will support community trainings, peace education, harmonization of educational curricula, coordination with partner agencies, as well as monitoring, evaluation and reporting.

How You Can Help!
Volunteering as an intern with INTERSOS in South Sudan will be an invaluable culmination to my MSW program, and ultimately will support the needs of the organization and children in need across South Sudan. Unfortunately, it will also be quite costly.

While INTERSOS has graciously offered to provide housing free of charge, the costs add up. The estimated expenses for my trip to South Sudan are outlined below:
-Airfare: $2,000
-Food: $1,200
-Tuition: $2,200
-Supplemental Insurance: $150

Any contribution you can make to support me in this work would be most appreciated! Whether this is through donations or spreading the word, every little bit helps!

The ongoing conflict in South Sudan threatens the well-being of millions. I look forward to contributing to efforts that help ensure that children can laugh, play and learn in protective environments.

Any donation surplus will be given to INTERSOS. I may take a brief detour to Swaziland to visit my family from Peace Corps on the way home, but no donated funds will be used to support the visit.
