Project Hope

VAASOCAL (Visakha Vidyalaya Alumnae Association of Southern California) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization formed with the dedicated and enthusiastic participation of alumnae from Visakha Vidyalaya – a school that has provided an excellent primary and secondary education to thousands of women in Sri Lanka. We have raised funds and helped implement a number of worthy humanitarian projects in the past 10 years.

Project ‘Hope’, our current initiative was inspired by our loved ones who have either passed away or are fighting breast cancer and compassion for child cancer survivors who have lost limbs due to cancer.  Breast cancer is a leading cause of death and disability among women in Sri Lanka. Being a developing nation, they do not carry sufficient facilities for early detection or surgeries and lack means to facilitate essential support for cancer survivors to lead a fruitful life. The lack of access to diagnostic and surgical equipment and life enhancing support, particularly for rural women and children, is a serious problem.

Project Hope intends to allocate the raised funds as follows;

* VAASOCAL has partnered with the Wayamba Cancer Society to equip the breast cancer unit of the Kurunegala Regional Hospital in Sri Lanka with urgently needed biopsy needles and surgical equipment worth $5k.

* Provide at least 5 child cancer survivors who lost limbs due to cancer with state of the art prosthetic legs that can grow with the child and has mobility at the knee at a cost of $1,700 each; worth $10k.

*Present scholarships to senior year students with financial difficulties at our Alma Mater Visakha Vidyalaya to finish their high school education, worth $5K.

*Overall fund raising target is $20k.
