Mini Youth Empowerment Camp

Welcome Mikwano!

In Peace Corps Uganda, youth camps are huge! They are week-long leadership camps that host between 80-100  teens from around Uganda and normally take place 3 times a year during school breaks. As volunteers we use camps to reward our active youth and promising young leaders. They always come back from camp motivated to make a difference in their communities and excited to show their peers what they've learned.

Not only are camps great for the kids, but they are also a high point in service for the Peace Corps volunteers. At these camps, we are able to see the immediate impact they have on the lives of our Ugandan youth. It is so rewarding to see 100 smiling, dancing, singing, EMPOWERED young people and knowing you helped make that happen.

This December, 2 weeks from now, Peace Corps was to hold National Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) and BUILD (Boys of Uganda in Leadership Development). Nicole and I recruited 14 of the best kids from our Peer Health Clubs and have been going back and forth to their schools for weeks getting permission slips signed, talking to teachers and getting the accepted kids pumped up for an amazing experience! They are beyond excited.

Unfortunately, at the last minute, Peace Corps decided to change the way that camps have been running for the past few years, leaving the directors of national camps underfunded and out of luck. Because of this, camp has been cancelled and we are devastated for our kids who have been looking forward to this for months.

Nicole and I are dreading breaking the news to our campers. We don't want to be people in their lives that have given false hope. We don't want their perceptions of us to change after 18 months of building relationships with them.

Another volunteer, who is just as disappointed for her campers as we are for ours, has suggested we get all of our kids together to do a mini youth empowerment camp. We would be doing the same types of lessons on leadership, health and life skills but in a shortened  time span. We are hoping to do 2-3 days of lessons and activities with time for some fun and ice cream squeezed in.

Without a  grant, we can't fund many activities so we would appreciate any donation, small or large, that you can offer! The money we are asking for would cover transport, meals and lodging for 20 of our youth to take part in this mini camp.

We will take tons of pictures so you can see how much of a difference your donation is making to our Ugandan youth!
