The Project
A group of MSW (Masters of Social Work) Online students and two (2) faculty from the University of New England will work together, many of them meeting for the first time in Jamaica in January 2015. They are brought together through an International Social Work in the Caribbean Class, the group is participating in a week long learning experience in Jamaica where they will be witnessing first hand what Social Work looks like in Jamaica. The group will be participating in Social Work classes at the University of West Indies, visiting multiple social welfare agencies, providing community service to selected agencies, and experiencing the Jamaican culture.

The students and faculty participating in this experience have adopted the Woodford Homework and Learning Centre as the recipients of a good-will gesture. The group is hoping to raise $2,500 USD. The Woodward Homework and Learning Centre operates on $1,500 USD per year annually. They serve approximately 150 children in Woodford, rural St. Andrews Jamaica. The remaining $1,000 that we hope to raise will be used towards scholarship for student towards learning abroad opportunities. This will allow students from the University of New England to have field placements in Jamaica and students from the University of West Indies to have field placements in the United States.

This organization was selected after consultation with Social Work faculty at the University of West Indies to ensure that the good-will offering would be used by a legitimate organization with direct ties to the community and one that embodies the social worker philosophies.

Who will be helped
A homework and learning centre project in the community of Woodford, rural St. Andrew is the winner of the 9th annual Michael Manley Award for Community Self-Reliance.
Woodford was declared the winner from a field of seven community projects at the awards ceremony put on by the Michael Manley Foundation at the Little Theatre.

The winning community project was selected based on its impact on the community, the degree of local control by community members and sustainability of the project. The project received $200,000 and a trophy for emerging the winner.Guest speaker, Prime Minister Bruce Golding described the community projects as an actualization of Michael Manley’s concept of self-reliance, as they were initiatives mounted by people who believed in themselves and who have demonstrated that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. He said he welcomed the invitation to address the awards ceremony, adding that both the invitation and his acceptance represent the maturing evolution of Jamaica’s politics.

He underscored the fact that Michael Manley recognized the importance of the people and sought ways to mobilize and challenge them to think and reason, and to be aware of their dignity, self-worth and potential. The seven projects short-listed for the competition originated from rural Jamaica, a fact which Mr. Golding said proves that community development, engineered by the community itself, is achievable. He noted that the benefits rest not just with the projects themselves, but are evident in the social cohesion and institutional capacity building.

In commending the Woodford Homework and Learning Centre project, the Prime Minister said there were important lessons to be learnt from that project as well as the others entered in the competition He urged the Michael Manley Foundation to study and document the modalities of these projects, in order to create a template that could be applied to other areas.
