Hello kind folks of the internet! My name is Theo. I’m a queer trans masculine person who currently lives in London with my partner and cats. I like to make art and bad puns and I need your help to acquire life changing surgery.
The surgery that I need is called a double incision chest reconstruction, but you might know it simply as a form of ‘top surgery’. The process will involve the removal of fat and tissue in my chest, leaving me with smooth pectorals. This procedure will seriously decrease my gender dysphoria and improve my mental health more than I can describe. As of August 2014, I’ve been out as trans for two years and I started testosterone in June. I have legally changed my name to my chosen one and after my chest surgery is complete, I’ll feel so much more comfortable in myself and well on my way in terms of my physical transition!
My chest has been a huge source of gender dysphoria for me and the anxiety and depression that it causes is becoming unbearable. In addition to the toll it’s taking on my mental health, my chest is causing me serious physical problems. To be able to leave the house, go to work or just feel comfortable with myself, I have to bind my chest. This process is extremely painful and as I am already living with chronic illnesses that cause me a lot of pain, I simply cannot go on like this.
So I really, really need your help. As a working class queer with no financial safety net, I would find it totally impossible to afford this surgery on my own. I’m unable to ask my family for any monetary support and I’m already struggling as it is; I’m in the social work field which is notoriously badly paid and I’m on a zero hours contract so work is sporadic at best. We rely on my partner’s income but right now, that’s only enough for essentials and we can’t manage to put anything by. It’s a really, really difficult thing to ask for help (anyone who’s grown up poor knows how internalised classism can often stop us from reaching out and asking for support) but I feel so overwhelmed by this and there’s no way I can raise this kind of money on my own.
Your kind donations will cover travel, time off work (rent etc.), hospital fees for an overnight stay, theatre costs, nursing care, food, pre-operative tests, the procedure itself and the anaesthetist fee.
