Octavia “Taterbug” is the eldest daughter of our friend Niko “Tableflipper” Moore (AKA GrouchoSmurf). A pretty typical 14 year old: kind, funny, strong, quiet and smart. Prepping for high school, she was already accepted into some college-level classes. New horizons awaited as a freshman in a new high school, but unbeknownst to her parents, Octavia was also struggling with depression, bi-polar and personality disorders, which were discovered only after her first failed suicide attempt.
One morning at 3:51AM an officer knocked on the door of the Moore residence, because they had received a tip of a possible attempted suicide. After a thorough search, an empty bottle was found and Octavia was rushed to the ER for treatment. She spent an extra 3 days in a children’s hospital waiting for medical clearance, her father, Niko, always at her bedside before being transferred to an inpatient facility where she stayed for almost a month.
2 days after her release, she attempted suicide again using pills she had hidden in an antique tea set, and had told the doctors what they wanted to hear to allow for her release. She is now being taken care of in a Baltimore facility a 3 hour drive away from her family. They speak to her almost daily and manage several visits a week.
At this time it appears she will require long term residential treatment. Her Medicare already expired and private insurance covers only part of her treatments, costs that total up to $1,100.00 per day for a possible period of 6 months to a year.
