Ebola Prevention Sierra Leone

Donation protected
Stopping the spread of Ebola is the priority while we wait for a vaccine. Donate to fund transmission prevention education in Sierra Leone.

We are a group of artists who call ourselves Tinap Tranga, Krio for "Stand up Stronger," and we need your help to stop the spread of ebola in our communities.  With your support, we will create a public drama with our students in Makeni, educating the community about strategies to prevent the transmission of the virus. Following our public performance for an audience of 400 Makeni citizens, we will film the educational drama and distribute it through formal national television outlets including SLBC TV.  Additionally, we will share the video with local chieftaincies across Sierra Leone so that they can hold public screenings for their communities.  With this distribution plan, we hope to reach hundreds of thousands of Sierra Leoneans, educating and empowering them to protect themselves against ebola, and stopping the spread of misinformation by using our cultural tradition of public drama.

More Information:
As of the writing of this project description, over 1500 people in West Africa have died as a result of the ebola outbreak. In Sierra Leone, the country hit hardest by the epidemic, one of the biggest problems with containing and preventing the disease is the spread of misinformation among Sierra Leone's citizens. Many people don't understand how the disease spreads and how to protect themselves, and some are in denial that the virus exists at all. As international health workers flee the country, it is up to the people of Sierra Leone to help stop the spread of the disease.

As the SLANGO (Sierra Leone Non Governmental Organization) established by Arts Education International, we have conducted free arts outreach programs in Sierra Leone for the last six years. We have used the dramatic arts to educate communities about the rights of children, the dangers of human trafficking, and the importance of good health and hygiene in the prevention of diseases like dysentery.

In West Africa, public dramas are traditionally used to resolve conflict within communities and educate citizens about critical issues. In this spirit, we will create a public drama educating the people of Makeni about the ebola crisis and how to help prevent the virus from continuing to spread. Working with our drama students in Makeni, we will create a short film of the educational play to be aired on SLBC TV, the Sierra Leone national television station, and distributed to local chieftaincies across Sierra Leone to share with their communities.

A message from Mohamed Kamara of Tinap Tranga:

"Due to the out break of EBOLA crises in Sierra Leone, and as a local NGO based in Sierra Leone we are joining hands and helping the Government and Ministry of Health to inform our people of prevention methods through drama to reduce the spread of ebola. By making a short video skit for people to see, be aware, learn and know how to take necessary precautions to stop the spread of the ebola virus, we will save lives. For we all know that well over half of our adult population is illiterate, and the only means of reducing the spread of ebola is by education, and the only means to suceed is through the dissemination of this video drama."

Thank you so much for supporting us urgently in this crucial work!
