SP 794 Restoration - Phase One

The Friends of the SP 794, a division of the San Antonio Railroad Heritage Museum(SARHM), was formed in 2008 and is dedicated to the operational restoration of the former Southern Pacific steam locomotive 794. The SP 794 is one of the four remaining Texas & New Orleans (Southern Pacific's subsidiary in Texas and Louisiana) Class MK-5 steam locomotives in existence. Built in September of 1916, she was placed into service in October 1916, so in September 2016 the SP 794 will be 100 years old.
In 2010, SARHM contacted Scott Lindsay of Steam Operations Corporation to come and perform an on-site evaluation to determine the condition of the SP 794. Mr. Lindsay was very impressed with the condition of the locomotive, stating that she was an excellent candidate for restoration and it would be a shame if she wasn't. He estimates that the restoration could cost as much as $1M due to the fact she has been sitting in the elements for over 50 years with little to no care.
So starting January 2016, we are starting on Phase One of the restoration process which will include removal of all piping and external appliances, removal and fabrication of new boiler jacketing, remediation and sponge blasting of the boiler surface. Once completed, we will start onto the next phase of the restoration. Currently, we are estimating this phase to cost around $75K and will include the cost for hiring a certified remediation company to come out and remove and dispose the contaminates. It will also cover the acquisition of a crane and a trailer needed to remove the appliances and other parts that will need to be removed prior to the remediation being done.
Once the funds are in place, we estimate it to take a minimum of a month to complete the core portion of Phase One of the restoration. Our goal is to have the SP 794 rebuilt and ready to participate in the 2018 City of San Antonio Tricentennial celebrations.
