SHO Hope: End Human Trafficking

Tax deductible
OVERVIEW
Safe House of Hope  is a 100% volunteer-run and -led nonprofit that works on the front lines of domestic human trafficking. We conduct outreach and currently operate two drop-in centers that provide services to human trafficking victims. In 2013, we recorded over 1,000 client visits at our South Baltimore drop-in center, and spoke with 851 women and men during street outreach. Our goal in 2015 is to open two additional drop-in centers in NE and NW Baltimore City - areas that our outreach teams have identified as having a high prevalence of human trafficking. All donations will go directly to victim services and support us in our effort to reach additional victims in North Baltimore who are currently without services.

DO YOU KNOW?
(1) The average age of entry into the commercial sex industry in Maryland is 12 years old (2) 70% of domestic minor sex trafficking victims have experienced physical or sexual abuse at home (3) Traffickers prey upon vulnerable youth, including their own children and relatives (4) Common recruiting locations include schools, malls, bus stations, parks, shelters, foster homes, and courthouses (5) Traffickers steal ID cards and birth certificates to prevent victims from receiving social services (6) Traffickers may enforce drug use to induce dependency (7) Severe physical retaliation and threats hold victims in a constant state of fear and obedience

OUTREACH
Victims of human trafficking are often isolated and feel forgotten. Through street outreach and internet outreach, our volunteers let these individuals know that they are not forgotten or alone - that we care about them and that there are services available to help them get out of their situation. We distribute our 24/7 talk/text line phone number and callers are encouraged to visit one of our two drop-in centers, currently located in South Baltimore City and Howard County. We also conduct outreach at juvenile detention centers and at Maryland Correctional Institute for Women.

SERVICES
At the drop-in centers, clients can receive food, clothing, toiletries, take a shower, and wash laundry. We also offer on-site healthcare, counseling, life-skills classes, GED tutoring, help finding housing, and help finding employment. Our drop-in program assists women in realizing their own strength and ability to work toward and maintain self-sufficiency. We meet each woman right where she is and start building from that point forward. We initially assess each client’s most prevalent need and then work step-wise to build success in her life. Many of our women have been abused and victimized and need help to realize that they have the power to change their lives.

HOST FAMILY
We also operate a host family program in which married couples take a client into their home in order to help support him/her through the difficult process of healing, growth, and change. Our host families are not compensated, and we have found the family setting to be very effective at helping our clients to achieve positive life change.
