Ricky Ashworth Magic Power To Pedal

Eastbourne Eagles No 1 David Mason is planning a 320+ mile cycle ride to raise money for seriously injured speedway rider Ricky Ashworth. Mason plans to
cycle from Eastbourne to Ashworth’s home in the North West of England. Sponsorship money has already been pledged for Mason, who expects the ride will
take three days to complete.
Ashworth spent a year in hospital after a crash in August 2013 while riding for Berwick at Scunthorpe. He was in a coma for 91 days. Mason, who is the first
Eastbourne rider for many years to live in the resort, said: “It’s going to be hard. I am sure on the second and third days my legs will be killing me. I know it is
going to be painful but the end result will hopefully be that we have completed the mission.”
Mason, 38, was spurred to embark on the ride after seeing a moving video of Ashworth on YouTube. It shows the former rider battling to walk, talk and do
everyday tasks again. He said: “I have raced against Ricky in the Premier League but it wasn’t about knowing that person. We carry on with our quality of life
and get on with our lives. Ricky doesn’t and that’s why I want to do something to try and make things easier for him.”
Mason has much to do before he sets off. The first thing he needs is a bike and is hoping a local person or company will donate a suitable bike which can
then be auctioned at Ricky Ashworth's benefit meeting to raise more money. “I need all the kit as well but have started training indoors. There is a lot to plan
and I have to take account of the fact that my diet is wheat and gluten free. My family think I am nuts but they realise it is for a good cause,” he said.
Mason sets out on March 6 and has targeted raising £10,000. “I need as much backing as possible from the speedway community to help Ricky,” he said.
