Rebuild Dominica

On August 26, 2015, Tropical Storm Erika brought destruction to Dominica, washing away bridges, roads, homes, and even lives. To date, twenty are reported dead while 50 remain missing. According to the Prime Minister, the extent of the devastation is monumental, setting the island back two decades.
Dominica should not be confused with the Dominican Republic. Dominica is located in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean, nestled between Guadeloupe and Martinique. It is where I grew up and where I called home.
Athough I now live in Philadelphia, I have vivid memories and even nightmares of riding out Hurricane David as an 8 year old child in this same Dominica. My family rode out the storm, listened to howling winds and rains, nervously watched stationary items uproot, and then heard the galvanized roof tear from the corners of our home. Once the storm was over, I hoped and prayed that the rest of the world would help. Some did, while others stood by.
It seems like just yesterday that I was there after the storm and I keep thinking there is a little girl somewhere in Dominica clinging to a hope that someone will help. It is in that spirit that I will help and call on anyone else who can, or desires to contribute to the “Rebuild Dominica” campaign to do so. I know no gift is too small or insignificant after you’ve come through a storm.
