Students Helping Sea Turtles!

Tax deductible
Would you like to support a service-learning project that encourages reading, empathy, and environmental awareness?  Every other year, the students at Belton Elementary School, in upstate South Carolina, participate in a Love the Loggerheads Read-a-Thon to support their state reptile, the loggerhead sea turtle. The money they raise is donated to The South Carolina Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Rescue Program*, which provides a place for injured sea turtles to receive world-class care, treatment and medicines, with the ultimate goal of releasing these endangered animals back to the sea.

The 5th read-a-thon has just ended and the students who participated are collecting their sponsor donations. You can add to the total amount that they collect by becoming an Anonymous Sponsor and making a donation before April 20, 2015.  When you make your donation, please put "Belton Elementary School Read-a-Thon 2015" in the comment section. Your donation will be included in the big check that the students present to Kelly Thorvalson, the Sea Turtle Rescue Program Manager at the South Carolina Aquarium, during our Earth Day Celebration on April 22, 2015.

In 2007, Belton Elementary and Marshall Primary (also in Belton) were the first schools in the state to raise money for the Sea Turtle Rescue Program. BES students have since donated $11,767.55 through four read-a-thons—more than any other public school in South Carolina.  During these read-a-thons, the students have learned that human actions pose the greatest threat to sea turtle survival. Their efforts have made a huge difference for our state reptile and have raised awareness of the difficulties that these magnificent animals face.  Learn more about our past Read-a-Thons

I sincerely appreciate any amount that you are willing to donate.  If you have any questions about our Read-a-Thon or are interested in having a Love the Loggerhead Read-a-Thon at your school, feel free to contact me.
Thank you!
