Islanders with mental health or addiction issues are falling through the cracks. They’re almost invisible, but they’re here, and we’re losing some. Let’s help them recover and reconnect, here in the community, as productive, contributing members of our Orcas Island family.
Trouble in Paradise
Orcas Island is a fantastic place to live and grow, and when services and help are needed, excellent resources exist here, if you know how and where to get them. But for some with mental illness or substance abuse disorders, Orcas can be a place of insurmountable challenges. These islanders need short-term help in a very specific way.
Building Connection
Recovery In Community starts when we hear of any Orcas resident in trouble with mental illness or drug and alcohol problems who is isolated from options or assistance. If they fit our criteria, we go to the tent or the car they’re living in, the park or library where they spend their days. We go to where they are, and we go right now. We try to determine immediate needs—to keep them out of harm’s way; to find food or shelter; to get insurance, medical treatment, counseling, or detox. We walk with them, literally, over the bridge from crisis to assistance. And, when they’re ready, we're there for them again through the transition to living a connected and productive life.
Who We Are
The organizers of Recovery In Community are islanders with experience in this arena and the background to make it work. We are veteran trustees of other community organizations, representatives of the 12-Step community, a trained counselor, a nurse. And the group is growing.
We've gathered information, and we've discussed our plan with key community members in a position to know—please read their statements of support on this page! We've drawn on the experience of many to zero in on this specific problem.
Help Us Put Recovery in Community to the Test
Your contributions here will fund a part-time coordinator and provide trained advocates with small, flexible accounts to meet immediate client needs. We will work with a small number of clients, advocates, and community partners as a pilot program for this approach, learn from the results, then report back to the community what next steps should be.
What We Will Do
The RIC coordinator will recruit and train resourceful advocates to guide clients toward the services and supports they need, and then toward fresh community connections that will sustain and strengthen their progress.
Importantly, the coordinator will also continue to form and strengthen alliances with community partners—the organizations, agencies, and individuals who can be RIC's eyes and ears and who help us help them support our clients.
