Legacy of Love

Young people need encouragement and guidance to achieve their greatest potential. Mentors take on this role; strengthening their mentees' self-esteem, leadership skills, and chances for success. During his 20-year tenure at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts , Fr. John Francis Payne served as a mentor to every student who crossed the threshold at Ellington. His love and dedication to underserved youth was a life calling. He served as a parent, teacher and mentor to thousands of young people in his lifetime. Since his sudden passing in October 2014, many have come forward expressing his positive influence in their lives and sharing fond memories of him and their time at  Ellington.

Like many people, I spent much of my teenage years not feeling "seen" or acknowledged by important figures in my life, but Father Payne always saw me.

I cannot believe Father Payne is gone... seriously one of the people who changed my life forever!

In honor of his Legacy of Love we created a campaign to celebrate mentors who share Fr. Payne's passion for empowering youth.  With the help of our partner, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Duke Ellington School of the Arts will host Washington, DC area mentors and mentees at our upcoming Performance Series of Legends benefit concert headlined by Bobby McFerrin,
Bobby Meets Ellington
.

Your donation will support a mentor and mentee pair from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to attend the concert, meet Bobby McFerrin, and participate in a masterclass led by Bobby McFerrin.  We want to give our mentors and mentees a night out together, and make them feel like the VIPs that they are.

$1,000  Ten mentee & mentor pairs
$500 Five mentee & mentor pairs
$200 Two mentee & mentor pairs
$100 One mentee & mentor pair

Our goal is to host at least 200 mentors and mentees on May 20th.  The remaining funds will support mentoring programs at Duke Ellington School of the Arts.  Any amount will help us reach our goal.

Mentoring helps because it assures a young person that they are loved and supported. Some of the benefits of mentorships are:
• Mentors improve a young person's self-esteem.

• Youth who meet regularly with their mentors are 52% less likely than their peers without mentors to skip school and 46% less likely to initiate drug use.

• About 40% of a teenager's time is spent without supervision. Mentors provide teens with a valuable place to spend free time.

• Mentors strengthen a young person’s communication skills, by introducing them to new people and experiences.

• Mentors help young people set goals and start taking steps to realize them.

• Mentors can help their mentees learn how to seek and keep jobs.

We also invite YOU to attend Bobby Meets Ellington with your children, mentees and young people in your community who would benefit from the arts and positive influences in their lives. To purchase tickets go to ellingtonschool.org .
