PK Move
My name is Nancy Lorentz.  This year, my partners and I  started our organization, PK Move, Inc.  We are making this appeal for financial support to help run our programs.

What is the mission of PK Move?
PK Move is dedicated to sharing the transformative power of parkour, but we are unique in many ways. We are a "gym without walls" that goes to our clients, preferring to play outside whenever possible.  We serve those who would ordinarily not be able to attend a gym due to physical, financial, or other issues. Our focus at present is senior citizens, Title 1 schools, and breast cancer survivors.

What is Parkour?
Parkour is moving from Point A to Point B in a fluid, efficient manner. As seen on TV in "America Ninja Warrior," the opening of the 007 movie "Casino Royale," and various daredevil YouTube channels, parkour is mainly viewed as an intense obstacle course appropriate only for extremely athletic, young people.

At PK Move, we have experienced firsthand the benefits of parkour training:

• Overcoming physical and mental obstacles
• Acknowledging and conquering fear
• Discovering and adapting to the real environment
• Building courage, community, and creativity through playful group activities and/or individual challenges
• Practicing mindfulness in movement (to include measuring risk)
• Recognizing, adapting to, and/or exceeding physical and mental limitations

But isn't parkour for the young and highly fit?  How can "normal" people, let alone senior citizens and breast cancer survivors train parkour?

PK Move combines the principles and techniques of parkour with elements of other disciplines of movement (such as dance and yoga) for the purpose of improving health in mind and body. This unique, gentle combination of playful activity naturally strengthens the practitioner as s/he moves through the environment. Parkour is highly practical. Besides the general, well-documented benefits of exercise (like helping to control weight, lowering blood pressure, etc) parkour also builds strength and stamina.  Balance games enhance stability and train fall avoidance. With classes taking place in our clients' environment (neighborhood park, community center, or house of worship).  Parkour offers an exciting, yet practical alternative to typical fitness places like sterile studios and machine-filled gyms.

Getting Personal
As a breast cancer survivor myself, I know how it feels when treatment is completed. There is relief, but the cumulative toll of physical and mental fatigue is crushing. Emotionally, self esteem/body issues manifest after surgery. Physically, scar tissue impinges range of motion. The same issues may be experienced by senior citizens who have different health issues. They may also struggle with the outcome of surgery or chronic conditions such as arthritis.  Many times these physical ailments lead to isolation and depression.  Parkour offered me a way out of these dark places and I hope to share that path with others.

Effecting the Transformation: Mind & Body, Individual & Community
The practical, health-improving qualities of parkour are clear.  Beyond the obvious external, physical exploration, Parkour encourages internal, spiritual exploration.  Insight, mental strength and self-expression blossom as the individual moves through his/her environment.  Parkour also builds community as folks play together.  They naturally share and celebrate overcoming physical and mental challenges encountered in the safety of our classes and workshops.  With the aim of showcasing the people in our diverse parkour community, we also plan to present art exhibits, videos, and performances to the public.

We are a 501(c)(3) organization
PKMove relies on personal donations and corporate sponsorships to finance our programs to be able to offer our classes for low or no cost.  Our operating costs are low - the fundraising goal reflects our entire budget for 2016.  It will cover free classes, further professional training, insurance, and special art/performance projects mentioned above.

THANK YOU for your support. Your gift will help those in need overcome physical and mental obstacles.  Thank you for supporting us in our mission to share the transformative power of parkour with all!
