Empowering Ottawa's Homeless Youth

Ottawa Innercity Ministries is a registered charity that has been helping people experiencing poverty and homelessness for over 25 years. Through street outreach and other programs, we make almost 14000 connections each year, 4000 or these connections are with youth. We are now in our sixth year of running our Passion 4 Youth Fine Arts Program (P4Y), an arts program that empowers street-engaged youth and young adults.
Here's how P4Y empowers homeless youth:
1. We meet youth where they are at. Through street outreach we reach youth in their own environment and introduce them to the program.
2. We invite them into a safe and accepting environment. We do not discriminate in any way and we invite our youth to join us just as they are.
3. We engage them through the arts. We give them the freedom to express themselves through paint, music, writing, sewing and crafts.
4. We develop trusting relationships. We take the time to get to know them and support them in reaching their goals.
5. We focus on their strengths. By building relationships we get to know their strengths and build on them. We encourage and empower them through their own unique strengths.

We need your help to keep this program going.
Summer is a slow time of year for giving. We have our lowest period of donations this time of year. We could use a boost!
Also, P4Y has been expanding rapidly. We currently have 40 youth in the program each week and more want to join. On some nights we have turned youth away as we are at full capacity. In our Nation's Capital, we shouldn't have to deny these young people services due to lack of resources.
