Outer Hebrides Against Fish Farms

Donation protected

Outer Hebrides Against Fish Farms campaigns against the growth of unsustainable fish farms in the Outer Hebrides, a group of islands off the north west coast of Scotland.

We campaign to protect local communities, traditional and sustainable fisheries and the local economy from the impacts of industrial, open net fish farming in our seas.

We campaign to protect unique and threatened marine environments; to protect wild salmon, sea trout, seals and marine life in one of the remotest and most beautiful island groups in Europe.

We assist local communities threatened with fish farm developments to organise campaigns against development planning applications and to inform the local community on full nature of threat they face.

Does our campaign approach work? Yes! OHAFF was formed to bring together local communities and individuals in the Outer Hebrides who have opposed fish farms in a unified campaign that combines their knowledge, experience and commitment, and gives the opportunity for a greater critical mass of activity. Our members have in the past opposed fish farms and won! It can be done, we'll fight each application one by one if we have to!

We have a working group of 28 local people, and the campaign has many more supporters both locally and nationally. We are very active in the press and with PR, and we write detailed technical objections to fish farm applications!

Current methods of salmon farming harm and pollute our marine environment and destroy the traditional marine economy of the islands.

We are community based, we support traditional fisheries, we support local tourism, we support sustainable aquaculture which offers long-term economic benefits for the islands. We work with local salmon and sea trout angling associations, fisherman's organisaitons, local tourism businesses and other environmental groups.

Our campaign is one of the most high profile anti-fish farming campaigns in the UK - we are at the coal face of the fight to secure a future for wild salmon and sea trout.

We work to inform public opinion locally and beyond; we complete and lodge highly technical and detailed objections to new fish farm planning applications; we monitor the activities of the large Norwegian aquaculture companies who operate in our seas for each and every sign of disease, infestation and pollution from their fish farm sites.

If you are concerned about the negative impacts of unsustainable fish farming, please support our work.

100% of all monies donated to OHAFF goes into our direct campaigning work, we are an entirely voluntary organisation.

Funds will be used for campaign materials and distribution, new video and audio campaigns, events and public meetings to inform and build awareness, and for legal support.

Thank you for your support, we will keep you informed and why not follow us on facebook for regular updates and news links?
