Her: The new Kween

The production is a multi-generational all women's production called HER: The New Kween. It was held at the Anacostia Arts Center on March 29, 2015 in celebration of Women’s History Month. The production over sold out and was a tremendous success creating a major impact on all ages of girls and women. After the show we had various people asking cast members when the show would be going back up again. On our "reflection board" audience left statements about that the show saying it was mind opening, freeing, enlightening, emotionally touching, etc. Many others left affirmations with comments saying: I am limitless, I am beautiful, I love me, and black women do love black women.

Her: The New Kween is a devised production that explores archetypes, social norms, and stories that impel the journey of Black womanhood. The purpose of the show is to pose the questions and create dialogue about: What does it mean to be a Black Women in America? How does society affect black woman's identity, specifically in the areas of mental health and sexuality? How do black women celebrate sisterhood and rites of passage?

I support this movement due to the misrepresentation, and lack of diversity shown of our black women in the media. There are very few positive images being presented to us on screen or through social media and sometimes not even within our own communities. Through my own experiences and connection with African American Women I have found a great appreciation for their strides of resiliency and continuing to make herstory through all generational  trials and tribulations.

During this time Diversity Theater is seeking sponsorship for the production to keep the movement progressive within the District, Maryland, and Virginia area where dialogue and dynamic active workshops will be created for young black girls, women, boys, and men. The workshops will address the rites of passage of young girls and women. Specific topics that will be facility and address within the workshop are: identity crisis, how to build sisterhood, understanding sexuality, and unlearning shaming of womanhood. Our goal is to help the production produce a 2-week intensive educational workshops and touring season through September and October for young girls and women that address mental health, rites of passage, black women’s identity, and sexuality. We ask that you donate what you can even a $1 helps.
