Senior English in the Bronx

G R E E T I N G S 

My name is Emily Gutierrez, and I am an English teacher at the Urban Assembly for Applied Math and Science in the South Bronx. I am fulfilling my two-year commitment with Teach for America, and just found out that I am teaching 12th English this year! As seniors, my students are at a crucial time in their education. They are so close to reaching their goal of graduating and going on to a college of their choice, but they still need a ton of support and guidance to make that dream a reality. As the school year quickly approaches, I'm asking for any small donation to help my students on their path to college. I'm fortunate that I get to teach in a gorgeous, bright new building. However, my walls are bare and my bookshelves are essentially empty. Your donations will go towards many things for my students, from small decorations to a class library. In addition, we are lucky to teach and learn in a city as vibrant and thrilling as New York City. I would love to take my students on field trips and college visits, so that they can see everything this city has to offer. Finally, I also teach an Art Elective for incoming freshman. This class is officially a Surrealist Art Class. Unofficially, we are spending the semester learning about one another through the medium of collage. If you have any extra magazines, art supplies, paint, glue, or other crafty materials (I'm looking at you, Pinterest feigns and sorority girls) please consider sending them my way.
