Mireya's Miracle

On a cloudy April 19th in 2007 a ray of sunshine came to us and her name is Mireya. A beautiful, sweet little girl who has an unforgettable smile and an infectious spirit. Her name means miracle and now she needs one from us.

In the early spring of last year Mireya became ill and was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia.  Aplastic Anemia is a life threatening disorder in which the bone marrow fails to make enough blood cells.  Aplastic Anemia is not a type of cancer but may be associated with certain cancers (especially those affecting the bone marrow, such as leukemia) or cancer treatments. This has resulted in extended stays in the hospital, multiple tests and procedures to include a bone marrow transplant. 

Over the last several months Mireya's health has declined.  Attempts to increase her counts have been unsuccessful and require her to receive multiple blood and platelet transfusions to sustain her life.  A bone marrow transplant is the only cure for Severe Aplastic Anemia.  Mireya will undergo a second bone marrow transplant to replace her damaged bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells.  Recovery usually takes up to one year.  Mireya's road to recovery will require close monitoring and visits to specialists several times a week. 

The Bolton family is receiving excellent medical care from the staff of VCU's Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Children's Hospital of Richmond (CHOR). Included in this level of care are co-pays, prescriptions and other associated medical expenses which are mounting for this family of six.

This is where you can help. Every donation gets the Bolton's one step closer to being able to ensure that Mireya continues to get the medical care she needs. The money will also support initiatives to provide Mireya with the environment at home necessary to to protect her vulnerable immune system.
