Cheyenne River Service Learning Trip
I am very excited to be one of the chosen students to represent the Tunxis Dental Hygiene Program for their annual service learning project. This spring, I am traveling to South Dakota to provide dental services for the Lakota Tribe of the Cheyenne River Reservation. The Lakota tribe is one of the poorest populations in the United States. Without adequate access to dental care, this population has an extremely high rate of cavities causing pain and discomfort for many people. Our mission for this trip is to improve upon the oral health of people in the community. Using the knowledge and skills I have gained throughout dental hygiene school, I will provide people in the Lakota Tribe with oral health education, sealants, and fluoride treatments.
