Young Leader Has No Electricity

Donation protected
On December 12th, 2014, a high school student attended the Latina Leaders of Kern County, Youth Leadership Program asking for help...she has been living by candlelight for over 2 months.

35 women and I volunteer as leaders in the program to assist over 160 young women who attend local high schools to educate and encourage young Latinas to get involved in the process of finding solutions to issues facing young women. By providing the necessary tools, encouraging confidence and collaboration, and a unique opportunity for the girls to be exposed to current issues firsthand, we believe these young ladies will be well equipped with the ability to become our leaders of tomorrow.

One of our young women approached us for help.  She has been recognized in her high school as a leader and was submitted to our program for the 2014-2015 program.  She rides the GET bus one Saturday a month across town to attend the Youth Leadership Program arriving an hour early each time to ensure she isn't late.  She participates in the sessions and assists other young women in the program.

The young girl approached our program leaders and explained that her family fell behind on the electric bill due to some extenuating circumstances.  She has been going to a neighbor's house each day to study, and studying at home by candlelight.  She returns home to little food as the refrigerator is not useable without electricity.  Her family is struggling to get their $1200 bill caught up.

This young girl has proven that she wants more for her life.  She maintains good grades, plays in the band, shows up to our leadership program each month to better herself, and has been invited to go to England for her musical talents with the symphony.

Please help us pay her bill.  Any additional money over the $1200 will be used to send her to England, although as of right now, her request is to simply have lights at home for her and her family.

As any young girl would be, she is embarrassed and does not want her classmates to learn of the poverty she lives in, so we have kept her name confidential and used group photographs of our program.   We have spoken to the parents and they are grateful for any and all assistance during this hard time.
