New Kitchen for Boys & Girls Club

For twenty-nine years, members of the Kennebec Leadership Institute have taken on a major project in the Kennebec Valley area. This year, the Augusta Boys & Girls Club (ABGC) approached us to solve a problem they have in their current space. They would like to provide healthy cooking and eating programs for the at-risk teen Club members, but do not have a sufficient kitchen space to do so.
As a class, we have decided to take on the challenge of creating a commercial kitchen within their space at the Buker Community Center. After school nourishment is a key part of the ABGC programming, because for many of the 160 teens that attend the ABGC throughout the year, it is their last meal of the day.
In many family settings, kitchen and food preparation is central to family bonding. Many of the teens at the Club never get this opportunity in their homes, so it is important to provide this experience at the Club; it’s a skill that will serve them throughout life.
The kitchen will provide an essential piece to the ABGC’s programming, and also provide a space for other community groups to teach, learn and grow in cooking skills and healthy eating.
This common sense project is set to finish in mid-May, but we need your help. The kitchen won’t exist without funding from our community. We hope you will support the Augusta Boys & Girls Club, the at-risk teens in Augusta and KLI Class XXIX with a donation, and thank you for your support of your community.
Funds administered by United Way of Kennebec Valley, all donations tax deductible and 100% is given directly to the project.
