Please help me get to Cambridge!

My name is Karly Drabot. My dream came true when I received an offer of admission into the Master's in Social and Developmental Psychology programme at Cambridge University, UK. Cambridge has been ranked as the number one university in the world, and their psychology department tops the World University Rankings for Psychology. In order to accept my offer and attend in October 2013, I must meet the financial requirements of the programme by July 31, 2013. However, I have been self-sufficient since I was sixteen, and do not have access to the funds I need to attend. Further, I am not able to receive a student line of credit and the maximum Government of Canada Student Loan I can receive is $16,000. I maintained several part-time jobs while studying towards my BA, and I planned to do the same at Cambridge. Unfortunately, due to the intensity of the programme, I am not permitted to work. Therefore, I am currently working 3 jobs in order to save as much money as I can. I recognize I cannot get to Cambridge without donations, so please know I deeply appreciate any and all contributions.

I was fourteen years old when I independently fundraised for and participated in my first international aid trip. My experiences there taught me to channel my feelings of helplessness and guilt into determination and motivation. Since then, I have participated in several more volunteer trips and, most recently, organized a volunteer trip to Haiti for nine university students. I am passionate about human rights and my international volunteer experience has informed my career goal of improving the well-being of vulnerable populations.

The intensive, one-year Master's program begins October 1, 2013. It is truly a one-of-a-kind programme where I will be able to conduct my research on women in leadership, while also learning about global social issues. Upon completion I plan to work with an international organization (e.g., United Nations, World Health Organization, Oxfam, etc.) in the field of human rights. Specifically, I plan to protect and promote human rights and psychological well-being as a researcher, educator, and policy-advisor. My goal is two-fold: educate the public and policy-makers about key research findings, and, in turn, help develop effective policies and evidence-based interventions for social issues. I am determined to make a difference and create positive change in our world.

According to Cambridge's Estimated Annual Cost, this program will cost me approximately $50,000 CAD. I was fortunate enough to win the Pushor Mitchell Gold Medal Leadership Prize, UBC Okanagan's top undergraduate award, which has allowed me to put $10,000 towards my Cambridge fund.
$10,000 scholarship + $16,000 loan = $24,000 short of $50,000

On my website and in the media links below, you can learn more about who I am and why Cambridge is the best place for me. I believe in my potential to be an agent for positive change, but I recognize I need financial assistance to reach my goals.

I would be more grateful than you know for any help you can give.

With much appreciation,
Karly
