Bethel United Methodist Church (Connecticut) has teamed up with Heifer International (www.heifer.org) to raise funds to help our neighbors in Haiti overcome their struggles.

Did you know?

On Jan. 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake resulted in massive damage to both cities and villages, and the deaths of tens of thousands of people.

An outbreak of cholera followed, resulting in the deaths of over 7,900 people and the hospitalization of hundreds of thousands of others.

In August 2012, Tropical Storm Isaac destroyed crops that were already suffering due to a drought that gripped Haiti before the earthquake.  Isaac destroyed 40% of the harvest.

Hurricane Sandy followed in October 2012, devastating farmland and compounding the agricultural damage through heavy rains and severe flooding which washed away topsoil, fruit trees and cultures.

According to the Haitian government, plantations of corn, beans, sorghum, pigeon peas, bananas, tubers, peanuts, vegetables and rice were entirely destroyed or severely damaged, and over 64,000 heads of cattle were washed away.

On Jan. 12, 2013, the third anniversary of the earthquake, Bill Clinton visited the country.   "I think that you will see, particularly in the economic sphere, a lot more in the coming year, where Haiti is projected to have the highest growth rate in the Caribbean," he said. "Well, we hope to speed up some of the infrastructure. We have to repair the agriculture and ... build a lot more houses. We've got to get those people out of those tents."

Heifer International's R.E.A.C.H. Project (Rural Entrepreneurs for Agricultural Cooperation in Haiti) was created to address these issues.  The project aims to work with farming families, aid organizations, producers, municipalities, public-private sector partnerships and others to rehabilitate and strengthen the crop- and livestock-based livelihoods in Haiti destroyed by natural disasters.  REACH will build up four livestock sub-sectors (goats, cattle, poultry and pigs) and will help more than 100,000 people overall "“ the largest animal project of its kind in Haiti's history.

Any donation (minimum $5 or more) will help this country rise above its struggles. All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Thank you so very much for your support!
