Meet 11 months old Mariana Williams. Her mom, a young woman age 17, was taken into foster care after being the victim of multiple physical abuses. She is still in foster care herself, currently attending high school, and battling to handle adulthood and parenthood at once, as Baby Williams needs to be cared for:
As one who has experienced pregnancy could easily attest and those who haven't could only imagine, that is a beautiful but tough time for most women and families: Dynamics are affected, individual needs change drastically. So how much harder to go through such a life-changing event during teenage years! Now add to that equation a life scarred by abuse and the reality of being in foster care, with scarce knowledge and resources to create a healthy environment for mommy and baby:
Healthy Baby and Me, a program carried out by Our Kids of Miami-Dade/Monroe, Inc., was created especially to educate teenagers and individuals in foster care who face an early pregnancy and parenthood. The capable nurses and developmental professionals not only provide tangible supplies to those families, such as diapers, formula, and gift cards where additional items can be purchased, but they also provide direction regarding nourishment, administering medication, identifying developmental challenges, and more.
The Program's help really is vital to many of these girls, as they arrive at this situation with little to no means or understanding about their own circumstance, as well as their child's.
The size of that challenge and Baby Williams' captivating smile just did it for us! We want to make sure her mommy is able to receive the full benefit of that program, so that Mariana can grow to be a healthy and happy little girl! Please join us to help these two girls: Mommy and baby. They desperately need direction, supplies, and a lot of HOPE. It is that important that we lift up one another in our community.
