Emergency Appeal

Donation protected
My name is Jen Wood, and I set up Hands Up For Action as a small project in 2011 following years of university holiday volunteering trips to Kenya. The objective of the charity was to provide education to vulnerable children, filling a 'gap' in current provision.

The project started off with one member of staff, and just myself fundraising from the UK.

Since then, we've expanded. We now have 6 fantastic, committed staff and volunteers, working full-time in Kenya. We have provided our services to 9 different project sites in Nakuru (Governmental and Non-Governmental), and we have more plans to expand.

We've supported hundreds of children in vulnerable situations, including ex-street children, children in prison, and those in low-income slum schools.

I manage all of the fundraising myself, whilst working full-time. I have friends and family and donors who have been a great support and who have helped us get this far, but I'm now at breaking point. If our funding does not increase in the next few months, I'll be forced to make the heartbreaking decision to close down the charity.

In perspective, around £650 a month can run everything. At the moment, we have around half coming in every month in sponsors, which is amazing, but I am regularly forced to fill in the rest from my own pocket, which is breaking my own bank. I can't afford to do this any more, and I need help.

I'm putting out this emergency appeal, and I have set a personal deadline of August. If, by August, I can not find regular sponsors to cover our monthly costs, I will be forced to close down. As much as I'd love to be in a position to do so, I can not continue filling in the remainder from my own pocket forever.

I set up this charity because I witnessed and researched the reality of educational provision (or lack of) for vulnerable children in Kenya, and I could not walk away. I will never forgive myself if the reality is the closure of the charity, as I KNOW how much the charity does, how many hundreds of children it supports for less than £7,000 a year! Yet I still can't seem to make it happen.

Earlier this year, I set a goal to open a transitional home and education centre for children. That objective still exists, but at this point, the lack of even general running costs and funding means that the plan will continue to just be a dream for a while longer.

I would be so grateful for any contribution that is made towards our running costs. Anything at all will help. If you can't make a donation but would still like to help, there are many other ways you can do so:

www.give.handsupforaction.co.uk- this is a website which makes a donation to us based on a percentage of your spend at thousands of online retailers. You give nothing, but the retailer does. You can download a reminder toolbar. This is a great source of income for us if used properly.

Community fundraiser volunteer- anyone of any age can become a fundraiser volunteer, and we have incentinves for different levels of funding you have hit! You can be inventive in how you choose to fundraise.

Sponsored event- let us know, we'll share it on our pages, we'll refund your entry fee if you raise over a certain amount, we'll set you up a GoFundMe page.

Bake sale, non-uniform day, bring and buy... anything at all!!

We are so grateful for any donation at all. We also have monthly sponsorship options available at www.sponsor.handsupforaction.co.uk, and an emergency appeal £5/month sponsorship at www.emergency.handsupforaction.co.uk

Thank you to everyone who has helped us get to where we are, and we hope we can continue providing education into the future!
