Healthy School Food Maryland

Tax deductible

Nutritious school breakfast? Doesn't meet the mom test. Help us bring healthier food to Maryland's schools.

When you hear about improvements to school food and great programs serving breakfast in the classroom, you probably imagined something different than this photo (those are French toast sticks by the way). But this is the ugly reality of school breakfasts. Sugar bombs. Here's a sample of a week's menu for breakfast in one classroom in a Maryland school:

Monday: Bagel with a slice of cheese, craisins, apple juice, chocolate milk (7 1/2 tsp. added sugar; 11 1/3 tsp. total sugar)

Tuesday: Cinnamon Bun, craisins, chocolate milk, OJ (10 tsp. added sugar; 17 tsp. total sugar)

Wednesday:
2 pancakes soggy with syrup already on them, craisins, OJ, chocolate milk (9 1/2 tsp. added sugar; 16 1/4 tsp. total sugar)

Thursday:
Bagel filled with cinnamon cream cheese, craisins, chocolate milk, OJ (10 1/4 tsp. added sugar; 17 tsp. total sugar)

Friday: Chicken sausage panwich (aka pancake sandwich, looks like a corn dog), apple juice, craisins, chocolate milk (8 tsp. added sugar; 14 3/4 tsp. total sugar)

Did you know that children ages 4-8 shouldn't have more than 3 tsp. added sugar a day, and pre-teens and teenagers shouldn't have more than 5-8? These breakfasts have more than double or triple the added sugar little kids should be eating in an entire day. Then they're expected to sit still and concentrate!

Give to our campaign to help Healthy School Food Maryland:
1. Pass a law to get schools to limit the amount of added sugar they serve in one meal.
2. Pass a law to require all the a la carte foods schools sell to kids to appear on the menu (see photo example below).

Your donation will also help our program to give School Food Grades to every county in Maryland to help move the needle in a bunch of other areas to improve the nutritional value of school food. See healthyschoolfoodmd.org  for more information.
