Hope 4 L.Y.F.E. (Live Your Future Everyday) raises money for the early detection of breast cancer through free mammograms and breast exams for those who can’t afford it. Community Health of South Florida Inc. (CHI) provides those free mammograms in its state of the art radiology department  at the Doris Ison Health Center, 10300 SW 216th St., Miami, FL 33196, one of its 10 locations in South Florida.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the United States. It is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among nearly every racial and ethnic group. Although statistics show that Caucasian women have a higher rate of developing breast cancer, the death rate remains disproportionately high for African American and Hispanic/Latina women.

One reason is because of the lack of access to care due to the high cost of health insurance and/or lack of awareness and access to screening facilities. Some people may put off a visit to the doctor if they’re feeling fine because they might not be able to afford preventative tests. That should no longer be an excuse thanks to this initiative.

Hope 4 L.Y.F.E. was started four years ago by Palmetto Bay resident Angela Roberts who felt the urge to help others. She watched her father die from stomach cancer as well as consoled several friends and relatives who were diagnosed with breast cancer.

An independent business owner of Chicks N Wings, Roberts pays for health care out of pocket. So she wanted to help save lives by taking the worrisome burden off of women who skip health care needs because of limited finances.

“The reason why we die is the lack of knowledge, lack of resources and lack of finances,” she said. “Now there won’t be an excuse” to avoid mammograms because of financial hardships.

Hope 4 L.Y.F.E. raises money with its annual 3K/5K Walk/Run-A-Thon, which this year is Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014. Registration is from 6-7:45 a.m. The Run/Walk starts at 8 a.m. The Walk/Run will be held at the Homestead Air Reserve Base Park located at 27401 SW 127th Ave., Homestead, Florida.

And, for the first time, a Bedazzle Your Bra Contest raises money and awareness for the early detection of breast cancer. Similar to the ice bucket challenge, hundreds of people are bedazzling their bras and posting videos or photos to CHI's Facebook page using the hashtag #HOPE4LYFE and challenging others to do it or donate here.

We salute all of our breast cancer sponsors and survivors and offer our heartfelt thanks to help diagnose people with breast cancers and make them survivors too.
