Get Gil Well-Help Beat Hodgkins

Donation protected
Gil Jacob Hinojosa is my little brother who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. At this time my family could use prayers, visits, phone calls and monetary support for my brothers’ cancer treatments.

January 2015 is when Gil first noticed something wasn’t right. He decided to go to the doctor for a check up at our parents’ request. At this time he was feeling lethargic, weak and easily fatigued. The doctor did a blood test and diagnosed Gil with anemia and told him he needed to rest and change his diet. My brother took the doctors’ advice and limited his activity and continued to work as a hotshot truck driver.

After two weeks Gil noticed he was feeling increasingly worse with more intense and worrisome symptoms. He was more lethargic and weak with intense night sweats and breathlessness. Gil went to the doctor again and was told he was severely anemic and that he had an infection. The doctor prescribed an inhaler for the breathlessness and vitamins, including iron, to help with the severe anemia. He was also told to keep activity to a minimum due to his low blood count. At the end of January Gil, unable to work, had to rely heavily on the support of our parents, particularly our amazing mother.

During the month of February Gil became a recluse due exhaustion and an overall feeling of being unwell. During this time he continued to follow the doctor’s recommendations and hoped the vitamins would help. Our mother became Gils’ nurse and tried to take care of his every need. At the beginning of March Gil had another blood test. Once the doctor received the results Gil was ordered to go to the nearest hospital due to a dangerously low hemoglobin count. The proceeding events were life changing.

On Friday March 13 Gil went to the emergency room and was placed under observation while numerous blood test were performed as well as a CT scan. He was admitted shortly thereafter when his blood count was found to be dangerously low. The CT scan results were revealed Saturday and were not what anyone expected. The doctor told Gil he was certain he had cancer after reviewing his blood work and the CT scan, which revealed a 15cm tumor in the abdominal area. Gil stayed in the hospital for the remainder of the weekend to receive seven units of blood. During this time, family and friends visited and provided words of encouragement, smiles, love and prayers.

Over the next week Gil was scheduled for numerous diagnostic procedures including a P.E.T scan, and a bone marrow and tumor biopsy. Doctors also implanted a port so Gil could start chemotherapy as soon as possible. Finally, on Wednesday March 26 a name was given to the cancer that had already caused so much heartache, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Now that there is a diagnosis, treatment will begin. Gil will face chemotherapy treatments every two weeks for seven months. After chemotherapy, radiation may follow. The doctor did provide some positive news, stating that Gil has healthy organs that will help him during his fight against cancer. His prognosis is positive as long as he gets the required treatment. This is where your support can make all of the difference in our families’ life.

Medical and living expenses are swiftly becoming unmanageable and the extra stress will become detrimental to Gil while undergoing treatment. Our family has always been strong and steadfast with any adversity we face, but we are feeling the pangs of this terrible disease that not only affects the patient but also the family unit. Right now we need help more than ever to offset medical expenses and to help ensure Gil has the support he needs. Any donations, kind words and prayers will be greatly appreciated, as they will be crucial to Gils’ recovery during this trying time.
