Document Cambodian Genocide

Christi is currently in Cambodia.

Christi has arrived in Cambodia and is currently working in the Genocide Museum itself.  The current needs are rent and food, and still funds to cover some of the initial expenses that will need to be repaid when the project is over.

Women in Cambodia are finally being given a forum to share their stories of sexual and gender-based violence under the Khmer Rouge. For 40 years little was known and even less was published on this aspect of the genocide.

You have a unique opportunity to be part of documenting and publishing their stories so that a broad audience can learn about their experiences. Please give today.

Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia in the late 1970s. During their reign they exterminated approximately 1.7 million people--or 20% of the population. The Khmer Rouge forced women to "marry,” which institutionalized sexual and gender-based violence within the regime.

Their bodies became an instrument in the genocide of their own people.

It’s time to give these women a voice. An independent researcher is self-funding a 3 month research journey for the Cambodian Women’s Oral History project.

Christi Yoder, Ph.d., M.A. in International Human Rights and a certificate in Humanitarian Assistance, is a member of the Longmont TinkerMill. Dr. Yoder recently presented her research on Genocide and Sexually Based Violence in New Orleans and has additional research pending publication.

Because of her unique qualifications, Christi is privileged to be part of the research team in Cambodia. She will also research, publish, and provide evidence that may be used in court against the perpetrators. Christi was informed of this project via the Humanitarian Assistance Applied Research Group  at Denver University. Several people applied for this position, and Christi was selected by the primary researcher.

The project is not fully funded. Dr. Yoder will not receive travel costs, room, board, or payment for her time and skills. She needs to raise at least $10,000 to break even.

This is new and important research, which fits within the TinkerMill’s educational mission. Please give to this project today, so the TinkerMill can be a part of this unique work. TinkerMill is assisting with this project by sponsering a scholarship, whiche means all of your contributions maybe tax deductable.  After her three-month assignment, Dr. Yoder will report to TInkerMill and other sponsers  on her personal experiences.

Although a $25, $50, or $100 donation would go a long way toward subsidizing Dr. Yoder’s work on the Cambodian Women’s Oral History project, it is possible to fund this one fancy coffee drink at a time. If we get the right number ofpeople to contribute around the cost of a latte, we can reach our goal.

One round-trip ticket is about $1,500. Rent is about $490 / month via Air BnB. Her health insurance isn’t covering the cost of all nine required immunizations. If her appeal to the health insurance company isn’t settled, just one of the immunizations will cost $1,200. Phnom Penh is often flooded, food and water is sometimes contaminated, and electricity is uncertain. Yet, if Dr. Yoder, and her colleagues, don’t go, these women’s stories may never be told or published and preserved for public awareness.

More information about TinkerMill can be found at TinkerMill  and more information about the Oral History project can be found at Cambodian Womens Oral History .  Theresa de Langis is the primary researcher.
