Let me tell you a story about Elijah, a motivated
fifteen-year-old student who is looking to make a difference,
even as he aspires to take up an opportunity for himself.
Elijah has a serious passion for cycling. He will be
competing in the State Championships later this month. He loves the challenge of training and freedom of cycling on the open road.
Earlier this year he was given the opportunity of a lifetime
that would not only fulfill his dream to ride in Europe, but give him the chance
to live and go to school there as well. He has been accepted for a Rotary Exchange Scholarship to Italy next year. But there is a small problem.
He needs to raise the money for the trip. This did not deter him, but
motivated him to combine his talents and passions to create something that
would not only help to support his trip, but also inspire and motivate other
Elijah has created Elijah’s Yarra Valley Cycling Challenge. A one day 180km bike ride that includes some incredible climbs. This is not a known ride. This is not a
route taken by other organized cycling tours. This will be the first time this
unique 115 mile (180km) ride has been the attempted in one day. This is inspiring.
Elijah sees the ride not just as a way to raise money for
his trip, but as as an opportunity to inspire youth to get fit and healthy and
“get off the couch and out of their bedrooms and find something that they love
to do.” He believes the publicity generated by doing this ride will
help to inspire youth to set themselves challenges and take up opportunities.
“So many kids just sit around and do nothing and expect the
world to come to them. I want to show them that you have to make an effort to
make a difference and connect with the community if you want things to happen.
You have to set a goal and then work towards what you want.”
Elijah also wants to promote the work of Rotary, as well as active and
safe participation in cycling and at the same time showcase the Yarra Valley,
which has become his favorite training ground.
Elijah inspires me every day with his determination. He is passionate about cycling and he is willing to ride his heart out to get to Italy in 2014.
