I met my friend Dario in 5th grade, and we stayed friends through college and afterwards. I hadn't spoken with him much for the last ten years, as he was serving in the army and state department around the world. But through emails and Facebook, i was able to keep up with his travels and his growing family.
On October 13, Dario was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan. He was only 42 years old and he had a wife and three little girls waiting for him back in Houston.
As I have processed that information, reminisced with friends and classmates, and attended his funeral, it has become clear who Dario was not just to me, but to everyone. He was funny, smart, kind, dedicated, and with out question he was selfless. He lived a life of service from an early age"”from Boy Scout to Cadet, from the Army and the State Department.
The family has asked that In lieu of flowers, donations for his family may be made to the Dario Lorenzetti Memorial Fund. I have decided that the least I could do to honor his life, is to raise money for his little girls, as I run the NYC marathon, and two subsequent marathons this winter and Spring.
