You’ve heard about it on the news, or online, or on Facebook, or read about it somewhere: the Repair Café, where people fix stuff for other people—FREE.
But it’s not free of effort, time, or supply needs. That’s where the Charlottesville TimeBank has come in, organizing the hugely successful Repair Café last November, with a second one coming up this Saturday, March 5.
The Charlottesville TimeBank is a 501(c)(3) organization designed to nurture, inspire, and motivate a growing community network of neighbors to come together to create a caring and sharing community, where time is valued and people help each other.
In creating the Repair Cafés, the Cville TimeBank expands that network and adds an environmental element, using an idea that was born in the Netherlands in 2009 and has spread internationally.
Now, we can care not only for each other with services, we can also help to fix what is broken and eliminate some of the estimated 1600 pounds of trash that each American contributes to the landfill every year, and reduce the environmental consequences of manufacturing more items to replace them.
We are able to do this because the Cville TimeBank was one of only 5 organizations in the country chosen by the Center for a New American Dream in 2015 to receive matching funds for a neighborhood enrichment project. With that successful campaign, we held our first Repair Café in November 2015.
And we held it under budget, so with the remaining funds we decided to do a second one this Spring. But we can’t quite stretch those funds as far as they need to go.
Our event is Saturday, March 5, but we're short of funds to completely cover the insurance, event space, supplies, and a small stipend to a coordinator.
Help us restore Cville TimeBank's tiny operating budget by sponsoring a free repair or two... or FOUR! Our fixers are volunteers but if you had to take something to a repair shop, or toss it and buy something new… well, you know.
$5 might patch that favorite pair of jeans
$10 might repair a recalcitrant blender
$20 could fix a wheezy vacuum cleaner
$30 could piece that necklace back together again
