Clean Water for Kenya
Donation protected
Sanitation and waste disposal practices in East Africa have damaged the environment so severely that many families do not have access to safe, pure drinking water. Without pure drinking water, these families, especially infants and children are susceptible to a host of waterborne diseases.
According to Global Majority E-Journal, Vol. 2, No. 1 (June 2011), pp. 31-45 , "Kenya suffers from a severe water crisis due to multiple causes, including droughts, forest degradation, floods, a lack of water supply management, the contamination of water, and population growth. ...Water filtration at the household level is a relatively simple and cheap option to reduce the illnesses resulting from the consumption of unsafe water."
We want to be part of the solution. Working with the Maasai Wildlife Voices, a registered Community Based Organization in Kenya, I plan on traveling to the village of Narokwith 100 water filter kits so I can train villagers how to create a household water filtration system that will guarantee these families a supply of fresh water.
Funds will be used to:
- purchase filters in the US and ship them to Kenya
- purchase buckets in Kenya to make the water systems
- provide transportation and lodging to conduct a week of training sessions on how to put the systems together
- travel expenses to evaluate the feasability of expanding the program
This initial humanitarian effort will build relationships with people in Narok and the surrounding region and serve as an opportunity to explore broader environmental solutions. Ultimately, I would like to become involved in broader efforts including improved forest management, bioremediation, waste management, and developing income opportunities for villagers that improve environmental quality.
